ChordBuddy is a system which was designed to make your guitar-playing dreams a reality by gradually helping you play the guitar. All you need to do is to attach the device to almost any guitar and use the color-coded tabs to start playing. Not only does this guitar learning device teach you how to learn guitar chords; you’ll discover how to hold, tune and maintain your instrument using the entire ChordBuddy system. Although we’ve certainly been successful, it takes constant work and strategy to continue at a high level. My philosophy has always been ‘no matter how successful you’ve been, your business won’t continue to grow on its own’. Many of the connections and partnerships you make along the way give you a more steady foundation, but growing requires constant work. In my experience, there have been many entrepreneurs with great products who don’t understand the importance of constant strategy planning, which causes them to fail in the long run. So many people tell me “Oh you made it on Shark Tank, now you’re set for life”. Yes we were fortunate to ‘make it’ on Shark Tank and partner with the great Robert Herjavec and his team which has given us tremendous opportunities, but I know that I’ll only succeed if I keep working and finding ways to grow the company.

A woman who I knew approached me once and said “Travis what’s your secret, why are you so successful?” I whispered in her ear, “Do you want to know how to be successful? Every morning when you wake up look for new opportunities to tell people about what you do”. I don’t think that was the secret she was looking for, but that’s the truth. No one is going out of their way to find out about you or your business. You’ve got to take the initiative to get out there and make it happen. I remember back in the mid 80’s when I and a group of guys started a band called Silverado, no one knew who we were. We had great players, and great music but without being well known we weren’t going to get anywhere. When we put out our CD we wanted to get the big stores like Walmart to carry it, but without any connections we had no way of getting in. At that point we knew we had to come up with our own way. We decided to get to as many Walmart parking lots as we could and just play. That’s right, a free concert. We all got together, called the local radio and TV stations of whatever city we were in and told as many people as we could that we were going to be putting on free concerts. When we finished in one Walmart we got in our cars and drove on to the next one. Over time we got to over 50 parking lots in which we put on free concerts and the crowds just kept coming. It got to a point where so many people now knew of us that Walmart themselves started to carry our cd!

Many entrepreneurs become disheartened when they hit a wall. I always tell people don’t be reactive, be proactive. You need to constantly look for ways to innovate and improvise. To this day even after appearing on Shark Tank and successfully teaming up with Robert, we’re always looking for new ways to grow our customer base

In fact we’ve focused on getting Chord Buddy into many schools to help teach kids how to play guitar. Every school I’ve ever reached out to is thrilled about the idea of teaching kids guitar. Chord Buddy In ClassWho wouldn’t be? The problem is most schools don’t have money set aside for guitar lessons. Here’s what we did: I contacted a local car dealership and made them the following offer. If you’ll sponsor our course for the local school we’ll put your ad in every classroom in the school that we work in. We’ll also create a plaque with your name and logo on it and attach it to each guitar these kids use. They liked the idea and decided to give it a try. About two weeks later they called me up and said that they had already sold two cars to parents of my guitar classes. The parents walked into their dealership and said “We were so proud that you decided to sponsor guitar lessons for our kids in school, we made up our minds that when we would look for a new car we’d come to you first!”

We had to be innovative, it was a great idea and it worked. Today I’ll make 10-15 phone calls to new schools to book appointments to introduce Chord Buddy. Never rest on your past accomplishments and never stop creating new ways to succeed!
